  Welcome Messages

Message from the President of World Federation for Mental Health

Deborah WanAs the current President of the World Federation of Mental Health, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Argentine Association for Mental Health to host and organize the 2013 World Mental Health Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 25-28 August 2013. It is also our first World Congress to be held in Argentina of South America Region and indeed we are pleased to welcome delegates from all parts of the world to participate in this Congress with the theme of “Social Inclusion through Interdisciplinary Interventions”.

World Federation for Mental Health is an international organization founded in 1948 to advance, among all peoples and nations, the prevention of mental and emotional disorders , the proper treatment and care of those with such disorders, and the promotion of mental health. Our signature project is the World Mental Health Day, an annual awareness campaign around the world held in October each year ever since 1992 and I hope that more countries will adopt this awareness campaign.

2013 World Mental Health Congress is an opportunity for all stakeholders to identify and discuss significant mental health issues and also to stimulate the government and non-government organizations to increase their effectiveness of their own mental health programmes. Mental Health is an important health issue and World Health Organization has issued a Global Mental Health Action Plan from 2013 to 2020 to be adopted by the health ministers of the world. World Federation for Mental Health, a civil society, with official relationship with World Health Organization, will work together to promote better mental health among all nations. You will be part of our organization by becoming either an organization or individual member and all are most welcome to join us.

I send my appreciation to all who attend 2013 World Mental Health Congress in Buenos Aires and your contribution will surely make the Congress a great success.

Deborah Wan, President
World Federation for Mental Health

Message from the Elected President of the World Federation for Mental Health

George N. ChristodoulouThe 2013 World Mental Health Congress follows a tradition of well-organized and well-attended congresses of the World Federation for Mental Health, an organization with a long tradition whose basic aim is the promotion of mental health in its wider sense. Our Federation has a rich record of achievements but it is best known internationally for the World Mental Health Day, celebrated on the 10th October each year worldwide.

For us in the WFMH it is a great pleasure and honor to hold our congress in Argentina, a vibrant country with history, tradition, color, music, movement and warmth. Personally I have had the opportunity to participate in a great number of scientific meetings in Buenos Aires and other cities. They were invariably excellent and well-attended. So, I have no doubt that our congress will be a success. The Argentine Association for Mental Health, a member of our Federation, is a further guarantee for this.

Mental Health is an absolute priority in our days, especially during periods of hardship and deprivation like the one citizens in many countries experience nowadays. It is indeed very paradoxical that the persons who need more support during these periods (like the patients with psychiatric problems and the vulnerable persons in the community) are the ones who pay the greatest prize and suffer more. It is services for this category of citizens that should be supported and funded more vigorously and unfortunately the exact opposite happens. I am sure that our congress will highlight these aspects and will contribute its interdisciplinary vista in the promotion of health and the social inclusion of our patients, as this is the theme of our congress.

Lastly, a personal note. I consider it a great privilege that I will start my duties as President of the World Federation for Mental Health in Buenos Aires, a city I am very fond of, not only because of its beauty but also because of the many friends I have in this city and the friends I am sure I am going to make during the congress.

I wish you a great success y un abrazo, queridos amigos y colegas

Prof. George N. Christodoulou
President-elect, World Federation for Mental Health

Message from the President of the Argentina Association of Mental Health

Alberto TrimboliDear friends,
We are pleased to announce that the World Mental Health Congress of the World Federation for Mental Health will be held in Buenos Aires Argentina from 25-28 August 2013.

Buenos Aires is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is cosmopolitan city with a rich culture and a fascinating integration of tradition and modernity.

Argentina has been through an extraordinary growth in the economy development in the last few years. At the present time it offers a diversity of cultural experiences, sports, events gourmet dining, bookshops, museums, theatres and the opportunity of enjoying its beaches, mountains, lakes and snow.

The 2013 Congress will be organized by the Argentine Association for Mental Health (AASM), voting member of the World Federation for Mental Health.

Every year, the AASM organizes its Argentine and International Congress. Over 4000 foreign and local experts attend it. In 2013, we expect this amount will be surpassed and the Congress will bring together professionals, mental health practitioners, community partners, users and governmental authorities to address a wide variety of topics of significant interest in mental health.

On behalf of the Argentine Association for Mental Health we are delighted to invite you to the 2013 World Mental Health Congress and we look forward to welcoming you to Buenos Aires.

Welcome!

Prof. Alberto Trimboli
